Top 10 Incredible Facts about Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac or St. Lawrence Fortress is frequently referred to as “Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar”. It is a fortress and theater outside the western wall of the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. The fort lies 37 meters (121 ft) above sea level.

It dominates the city’s two entrances, from the sea and by land. The fort is well known for its plays and its role in the resistance to Venetian authority. On the site where Fort Lovrijenac now stands, the Venetians attempted to construct a fort at the beginning of the 11th century.

They would have retained control over Dubrovnik if they had been successful, but the locals outsmarted them. In Lovrijenac, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series’ Croatian leg is held.

Now let’s look at the top 10 incredible facts about Fort Lovrijenac.

1. Dates Back To 1018 Or 1038

Chronologists have assigned the fort dates from the 11th century. Their reports claim the fort was built or established somewhere between 1018 and 1038. However, the fort’s first records of its existence date back to 1301.

2. Lovrijenac Has a Triangular Shape with Three Terraces

The triangular-shaped fortress has three levels. Since it is multi-leveled and has strong upper wall defenses, it has three terraces. These terraces face the southern part of the city by the Adriatic Sea.

The oldest port in Dubrovnik, Port Kolorina, is safeguarded by Fort Lovrijenac. The walls that are exposed to the outside are 12 meters (39 feet) thick. The part of the walls that face the actual city inside, however, is just 60 cm (24 inches) thick.

An etched inscription can be found directly over Fort Lovrijenac’s main gate. It reads: “NON-BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO”. Meaning: “Freedom is not to be sold for all the treasures (or all the gold) in the world”.

Ten large cannons can be seen on Lovrijenac’s rooftop. Ivan Rabljanin created and produced the largest one, known as the “Lizard,” in 1537. It’s vital to note that the “Lizard” cannon was never fired.

3. The Fortress Was Named After St. Lawrence

St. Lawrence inspired the naming of the fortification. He was a respected saint during the Dubrovnik Republic, and a cathedral inside its walls was originally devoted to him.

Unfortunately, the earthquake that struck Dubrovnik in 1667 severely damaged much of the interior. Restoration got underway right away and continued until the century’s end.

4. Fort Lovrijenac Was Built on a 37M High Cliff

According to a narrative from the eleventh century, the Venetians sought to conquer the city of Dubrovnik. This was done by taking over the populace and building a castle on the perched high-altitude rock facing the Adriatic Sea.

The citizens of the Dubrovnik Republic were informed of this plan at the time. Right before the Venetians arrived in Dubrovnik, it was decided that the locals would construct the fortress on the same site.

They somewhat tricked the Venetians, but they were one step ahead of them. When Venetians finally made it to Dubrovnik, carrying all their troops and building material on their ships, they were surprised to find an enormous fortress built. It was at that moment they knew their plan was a big failure.

Those were the first records ever written about Lovrijenac. The “Chronicles of Ragusa” describe how the fort was constructed in three months and then constantly rebuilt after that.

5. Builder I. K. Zanchi of Pesaro Was Responsible for Fixing the Upper Walls’s Fortification

The important task of repairing the top wall’s defenses was completed between the 15th and 16th centuries by the Pesaro builder I. K. Zanchi. Like many other buildings in Dubrovnik, Fort Lovrijenac sustained considerable damage as a result of the earthquake in 1667. To maintain the fort’s original condition, additional repairs were made in the 17th century.

6. Lovrijenac’s Use as A Stage Is a Relatively Recent Addition

The usage of Lovrijenac as a stage is a relatively new development in the fort’s history. The staging of Shakespeare’s Hamlet has come to represent the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is an annual summer event that was first staged in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in 1950.

Every year, between July 10 and August 25, it takes place. A production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was performed here as part of the Midsummer Scene in the summer of 2017 and 2018.

7. The TV Series Knightfall, Was Filmed Here
